Are there any sports to avoid if I suffer from incontinence?
Physical activity is essential to adopt a healthy lifestyle and avoid weight gain, one of the causes of incontinence.
However, there are some sports that weaken the pelvic floor muscles more than others, and therefore should be avoided or practiced with the right precautions. For example, all sports which involve jumping with legs wide open, such as basketball, volleyball, high-impact aerobics and some types of dance. But also activities where the abdomen muscles are used a lot, such as athletics or weight lifting.
Cycling or horse riding is not recommended for men, and more generally, nor are all sports which can stimulate the prostate.
In any case, consult your doctor to evaluate with him/her what physical activity is best for you, based on your habits and the type of incontinence.
